The biggest bus company in Cardiff
I have worked for Cardiff Bus for the past 30 years, and for 4 years from 1969 to 1973 before that. My father worked for them from 1949 to 1984 and my son has also worked for the company in past for 4 years. So you could say that as a family we have given a lot of time to this one company.
So who am I? My name is Stephen Burns, known to all as Steve, and I now work as an Allocations supervisor for the company. It is a job that I have done for about 20 years now, and it will almost certainly be the job that I retire on. I have worked as a Conductor, Driver, Ticket Inspector, Radio Control Inspector and now in the busy Allocations department.
This page is not about me however although I wanted to introduce myself first of all, but about the company and it history and the buses that we have used and use now. Also some words about the type of job that it is, and what makes a good bus driver. I have put a condensed history of the time spent with the company on a seperate page called Bus Life.
So first of all what is Cardiff Bus.
To go to the website, just click on the link above. Cardiff Bus has been going in one form or another since 1902, 105 years now, and like other bus companies has evolved over the years. Back in the eighties when 'privatisation was the byword, Cardiff Bus was made a private company, but unlike many others all the shares were held by the council. That is the way that it remains to this day, with the council holding all the shares, but we are still expected to turn a profit or at least cover our costs.
I have created a page about the type of job that involves passenger carrying on a public service vehicle. To go there click on the link above or by clicking on The PCV Service.
The bus above is one of the brand new 'Artic' style vehicles. 18 metres long,(60') and capable of carrying about 100 passegers they were bought in to service one of Cardiff's busiest routes, Ely. They are also uses in the Cardiff Bay area.
Below is one of the buses that I started driving on. BUs 408 a AEC type bus now maintained by a bus appreciation group.
